THE COLLABORATION GAME - C5's 'CONFEDERATE' COMMISSION
The trio of regional indies and commissioning editor behind upcoming factual series A Big History of… reveal how they collaborated on the landmark project.
In June, Channel 5 commissioned A Big History of… (fka 1,000 Years of History) – a landmark deep dive into the defining stories of China, Russia, America, Australia, Scotland and Ireland.
While it represented a big bet for the PSB, the structure of its production was more notable. C5’s first ‘triple-indie commission’ would see regional indies – Brighton pair Lambent Productions and Middlechild Productions and Glasgow’s Raise the Roof Productions – work together to create the 6 x 120 minutes series, with each taking the lead on two episodes. They were encouraged to collaborate and share, brain power, resource and production plans to create a seamless whole that tonally and visually worked in harmony.
