DEVIL IN DISGUISE: THE MURDER OF RONALD PLATT
The mysterious tale of a con man, murder and millions of dollars. This is the story of the murder of Ronald Platt by a chameleon-like fraudster, Albert Walker, one of Interpol’s most wanted, who assumed his identity and then killed him.
In July 1996 the body of a dead man was found in the nets of a fishing trawler deep off the coast of Devon – all that there was to identify him was a Rolex watch on his wrist. The local Devon police thought they were investigating a tragic accident. At first it was a complete mystery. No one with his description had been reported missing.
The police had only one lead - the Rolex watch. The serial number unlocked the name of the murder victim as a Mr Ronald Platt. But it would also unravel a twisted story of money, murder and stolen identities, leading to an audacious con man called Albert Walker who turned out to be Canada’s most wanted man.
This feature doc is built around the twists and turns of the extraordinary investigation. Police would go from thinking they were investigating a tragic accident, to tracing a mystery man, and on to something far more sinister involving fake identities, international fraud, and millions of pounds hidden in bank accounts around the world.
With access to the detectives who ended up investigating a case of a lifetime, to the partner of Platt, Elaine, who fell victim to Walker’s manipulation and deception after a chance meeting in Harrogate, the film unfolds their stories in parallel. Through their insight – we uncover how he managed to assume so many identities, and how his web of lies and deception came crashing down.
